Here is the physics: water gets into the ground, freezes, expands, and pushes up. That is frost heave, and it is what wrecks patios in the Fox Cities. A shallow or poorly compacted base holds water and heaves unevenly, so your patio lifts, tilts, and cracks its joints apart.
We fight it two ways. First, a deep, properly compacted aggregate base that drains and spreads the load evenly. Second, flexible polymeric sand in the joints instead of rigid mortar, so the surface can flex a hair with the seasons without cracking. For patios in low or wet areas, we will also spec permeable pavers that let stormwater pass through instead of pooling and icing over.
It is more work up front. It is also the reason our patios are still flat when the cheap ones down the street have been torn out.
