Kaukauna's hills are its signature — and the reason retaining walls are half of what we build here.
They call Kaukauna the Electric City for the hydroelectric dams on the Fox, but what we notice first is the terrain. This is some of the most sloped ground in the Fox Cities. Yards run uphill and down, and a flat spot to sit or plant is something you often have to build.
That is where we come in. Grade a slope right and you gain usable space, stop erosion, and turn an awkward hillside into the best part of the property. Grade it wrong and you get a wall that leans in five years. After 20-plus years of this, we know the difference.
A retaining wall on a Kaukauna slope is doing real work, and it lives or dies on what you cannot see. We dig a deep, compacted base and build in proper drainage behind the wall so water pressure and freeze-thaw do not push it out of line. Cut those corners and the wall bulges within a few winters — we have replaced plenty that did.
Done right, a wall is also a design win. Terraced levels turn a steep yard into flat, plantable, walkable space you actually use.
Slope means water moves fast, and fast water carves channels and strips mulch. We slow it down and steer it — swales, dry creek beds, and planted terraces that catch runoff before it reaches the low end of the lot. The goal is a hillside that sheds a hard rain without losing its topsoil.

Kaukauna is unusually hilly for the valley. Sloped lots need walls to create level space, control erosion, and keep soil from washing downhill. It is one of the most common projects we do here.
The base and the drainage. We compact a deep gravel base and build drainage behind the wall so water and freeze-thaw pressure have somewhere to go. That is what keeps a wall straight for decades.
